  • I think nationalism indeed is a bad thing. Being open-minded and embracing the whole world is a lot more worth striving for. Why should I stop at borders that were completely made up and have kept pulling people to wars over and over again? Restricting yourself or your identity to a city, region or country is the easiest thing to do because there are enough „others“ to distinguish yourself from – and that again keeps „alike“ people together and forms groups, identity and so on but also hatred, resentment and encapsulation.
As long as people try to tell me, they are proud to be of one nation, I can not believe in flags as symbols for GOOD. It’s just this kind of people who don’t accomplish anything to be proud of and then as a replacement choose their place, they had the luck to be born in without having contributed.

  • I’m not German. Germans seem to be the only ones who think a flag produces Nationalism, where Nationalism is defined as always a bad thing. Just because you once had Nationalism that resulted in Jew-murdering assholes, does not mean you’re not allowed to try again and be GOOD PEOPLE. Just remember to be GOOD and tell people who are assholes that they can do better, and should do better.

Nationalism can produce a set of values that a society adheres to and is reminded of. It’s only very German to think these would be bad values. And, last point, flag or no flag – you ARE Germans so get over it; whether you like it or not, you are German. You might as well use a flag to remind people in your country to be GOOD. A flag is a symbol. What that symbol defines is the will of YOUR COUNTRY. You only think a flag symbolises your past because you continue to let it, and not re-define it as something awesome. But for that, you would have to stop denying being German and embrace the things you like about being German and promote those GOOD values while protesting the bad ones.
